The Monkees' Peter Tork dies at the age of 77
Peter Tork, one of the original members of The Monkees, has died. Tork, best known as the keyboard player and bassist of The Monkees was 77. In the 1960's Tork and his fellow bandmates acted in a hit TV show about a fictitious Beatles-inspired pop band. Tork played what he called the "lovable dummy," a persona he developed as a folk singer. But in reality, he was an intellectual who was the most talented musician in the group. In an interview, Tork said he was proud that the show offered a positive depiction of young people during an era of great cultural and political conflict between the older and younger generation. After the series ended, Tork released various solo projects, while continuing to tour and record sporadically with his Monkees bandmates.
