4. SOUNDBITE (English) Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington:
"I think we are all aware of the stories coming out of Pennsylvania dealing with the horror of child sexual abuse over those years that the study was engaged in. But, here and now, let us turn our prayers to Mary, to Our Lady and ask her intercession on behalf first of all of all survivors of clergy abuse, no matter how long ago the abuse may have taken place or how recently. The pain and the suffering is something that we need to accept responsibility for in helping survivors. Their families and their loved ones and, yes, even the broader community of the church. Our prayers, our accompaniment, our support, our pastoral and spiritual presence are each one of them and all of them together ways in which we can help survivors of abuse. Secondly, we can also ask our Lady's intercession for those who maybe because of this terrible plague of abuse experience a lack of confidence in the church. It is, it is something that I fervently pray that we will be able to work towards -- restoring that confidence and faith. Our contrition and our resolve do not diminish in any way the pain of the survivors. And so while we work to restore confidence in the ability of the church, our ability to treat this problem, we need constantly to be there for survivors. And, finally, I think we need to recognize in our prayer those whose faith may also be shaken by the action or inactivity of clergy. We are here for this mass because we believe that here we encounter God. The church's great gift or in the words of Saint Paul, the church's great treasure of grace, is held in earthen vessels. And when there's a failure we have to remember that it's the grace of God, that great treasure, and not the vessel that is the font of our salvation, why we're here and why we continue to place our trust, our hope and our faith in the action that will take place on this altar."

STORYLINE:
Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the Archbishop of Washington, faulted in a Pennsylvania grand jury report over his handling of sexually abusive priests as Pittsburgh's bishop, is asking parishioners not to lose confidence in the church and to help victims.
Wuerl, one of the highest-profile Roman Catholic cardinals in the United States, spoke during mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington D.C. on the religious feast of the Assumption of Mary.
He said Catholics need to help victims who are suffering and he asked for Mary's intervention for those who lose confidence is shaken because of the "terrible plague" of abuse.
Wuerl told congregants to pray for the survivors of clergy sex abuse saying, "the pain, the suffering is something that we need to accept responsibility for in helping survivors."
The report says Wuerl approved transfers for priests who sexually abused children instead of removing them from ministry and concealed information when priests were reported to law enforcement.
Wuerl made no mention of the allegations, but has previously said he acted diligently to protect children.
